Abstract: Title: Children’s Social Learning from Digital Devices
Digital technologies have transformed childhood within a remarkably short period of time. Compared to previous generations, children now spend increasing amounts of time engaging with smartphones, tablets, televisions, and other digital media. While research has extensively examined the impact of screen time on children’s development, considerably less attention has been given to how different digital devices may shape children’s social learning experiences.
This research investigates how children learn from and through different digital devices. Drawing on theories of social learning and children’s growing engagement with digital media, the project explores whether device characteristics influence the way children respond to social information, acquire social norms, and engage with learning opportunities presented through screens. Across a series of studies involving preschool-aged children, this research examines how social learning from digital devices compares to traditional face-to-face interactions and considers the implications of increasingly digital childhoods.
